چکیده

Rana rugosa in Japan is divided into four geographical races on the basis of the karyotype of the sex chromosomes: one in which heteromorphic sex chromosomes occur in the female sex (ZW/ZZ-system), another in which they are present in males (XX/XY-system), and the remaining two in which no heteromorphism is seen in either sex. The last two inherit the XX/XY sex determining system. Y and Z chromosomes in the former two are of the same karyotype as the no. 7 chromosomes seen in one of the latter two, whereas X and W are caused by two inversions that occurred in the original Xs (no. 7). In this study, we first attempted to detect the structural difference between the resulting X and W by examining their chiasma formation. The chiasma distribution between X and W was closely similar to that between two Xs, suggesting that the W and X are identical in structure. Regarding the change from XX/XY- to ZW/ZZ-system, the simplest explanation is that the putative female-determining gene(s) on the W grew functionally stronger by inversions. Next, we examined the sex of triploids having two Xs and one Z. The data showed that the triploids with two original Xs and a Z were all male, whereas most of those with two resulting Xs and a Z developed into females as expected. We speculated that the female-determining gene(s) on the resulting X grew mildly stronger functionally by position effect, whereas those on the W grew much stronger for some other reason (e.g., duplication). The origin and differentiation of the heteromorphic sex chromosomes Z, W, X, and Y in the frog Rana rugosa, inferred from the sequences of a sex-linked gene, ADP/ATP translocase.

Sex chromosomes of the Japanese frog Rana rugosa are heteromorphic in the male (XX/XY) or in the female (ZZ/ZW) in two geographic forms, whereas they are still homomorphic in both sexes in two other forms (Hiroshima and Isehara types). To make clear the origin and differentiation mechanisms of the heteromorphic sex chromosomes, we isolated a sex-linked gene, ADP/ATP translocase, and constructed...

Change of the heterogametic sex from male to female in the frog.

Two different types of sex chromosomes, XX/XY and ZZ/ZW, exist in the Japanese frog Rana rugosa. They are separated in two local forms that share a common origin in hybridization between the other two forms (West Japan and Kanto) with male heterogametic sex determination and homomorphic sex chromosomes. In this study, to find out how the different types of sex chromosomes differentiated, partic...

Involvement of Androgen Receptor in Sex Determination in an Amphibian Species

In mice and humans, the androgen receptor (AR) gene, located on the X chromosome, is not known to be involved in sex determination. In the Japanese frog Rana rugosa the AR is located on the sex chromosomes (X, Y, Z and W). Phylogenetic analysis shows that the AR on the X chromosome (X-AR) of the Korean R. rugosa is basal and segregates into two clusters: one containing W-AR of Japanese R. rugos...

New records of trematode parasites (digenea) in the banded frog (Rana camerani) and marsh frog (Rana ridibunda ridibunda) (Anura: Ranidae), from southwest of Iran

Fourteen adult frogs including six banded frog, Rana camerani and eight marsh frog, Rana ridibunda ridibunda were collected from two sites of Chahar Mahal-o-Bakhtiari province at the southwest of Iran and then were examined for helminth parasites. Only Dolichosaccus rastellus  (50%) was found in R. camerani, Skrjabinoeces similis (50%) and metacercarian cysts of Codonocephalus urniger (12....

New records about helminth parasites of the marsh frog, Rana ridibunda ridibunda (Anura: Ranidae) from the north of Iran

A field trials were conducted to assess the helminth parasites of 12 marsh frogs (Rana ridibunda ridibunda) in the Anzali, Astara and Aghbaba regions in the north of Iran in May 1994. Experimental results showed that 83.8% of the Anzali marsh frogs were infected by one or two kinds of metacercarian cysts of digenetic trematodes. The helminth parasites were included Skrjabinoeces breviansa, S. s...
